First of all, welcome to my very first blog post! Exciting… and frightening! It has always been a personal ambition to launch my portfolio website and start writing my own blog - and here we are. Thus, this blog post is very special for me. Therefore, I will use this very first blog post, as a prologue for the buhlian blog - i.e. to outline the vision, inspiration, and direction of my future writing.
Vision
Before I outline the vision of the buhlian blog, let's first take a minor, personal detour. 2021 was a year of change for me. In October, I married my now wife, Sarah, and in November, we were blessed with the birth of our first child. Given these events, it felt natural to initiate a new start for me personally as well as professionally. Thus with the wedding, I chose to take on my wife's middle name, Buhl. This way our family would have a strong unity and I could spice up my otherways trivial Danish name.
This name change had me randomly explore the origins of the Buhl name. And this is where I stumbled upon Adolphe Buhl (1878-1949) - a French astronomer and self-taught mathematician. I am in no way able to describe Buhl's work nor his calculation of what is dubbed Buhlian trajectories. But from this excellent article, it is stated that Buhl's achievements worked as "(...) first intuitions (...)" for the highly acknowledged work of other academics in his field such as Nobel Prize winner, theoretical physicist Richard Feynman.
First intuitions... I love this expression. It perfectly sums up the vision of my blog and website in general (hence the name of the site). Thus, my objective is to inspire like-minded to initiate/progress their ideas and projects by providing practical approaches and inspiring perspectives on topics related to data science and web development. My hope is that you through my writings will find useful intuitions that can help or inspire you for new achievements.
Inspiration
Spoiler! - I am not an experienced writer. I do not see myself as having a clear-defined style of writing nor a well-defined genre to adhere to. In addition, I am not a world-class expert in my field. But I do not view this as a weakness. In fact, I see this blog as a splendid opportunity to define and develop my writing and knowledge on topics, I am heavily passionate about data science and web development.
In this learning process, I will try to adopt specific features of my favorite idols in the field of writing, sports commentary, economics, and data science. Thus, my inspiration for the buhlian blog will be:
- Jeremy Howard: I am a big fan of Howard and his team's approach to machine learning and deep learning. They effectively explain very complex topics in plain English. Furthermore, the notion of attacking learning with a code-first approach / "playing the whole game" principle, has been very inspiring and transforming for my learning in the past years. If you have no experience with Howard's courses hurry up and go to his site.
- Simo Ahava: He is the hands-down biggest expertise in the field of web analytics and engineering. He possesses an inhuman production level of blog posts, templates, courses, podcasts, etc. - always with a super professional yet hands-on approach to even the most complex topics. I have learned a lot from his writings and his takes on working with the technical part of web analytics.
- Malcolm Gladwell & Bill Simmons: I love the very personal, informal writing styles of both Malcolm Gladwell and Bill Simmons. In addition, I admire their curious and often innovative approach to old as well as new topics. They always manage to grab my attention and surprise me with new perspectives on topics, I thought I was confident with.
Direction
So with the vision and inspiration in place, the direction for the buhlian blog is to offer hands-on, professional writings in an informal, personal style to drive new intuitions and inspiration for the reader to use in his/her own projects. Piece of cake... This somewhat foggy description needs further direction. Thus, I have decided to focus on two areas:
- Data Science: In here, I will explore programmable data collection methods, in-depth projects on machine learning and deep learning as well as technical aspects in data processing and visualizations. I will be working in Python with concrete data projects. Code and files will accessible through my GitHub.
- Web Development: This includes, guides and tutorials on the development of my web projects as well as the technical process of testing and deployment. In addition, I will explore use cases and examples of how to improve/change user interfaces for conversion rate optimization (CRO) and optimization of user experience in general.
I will try to keep a relevant frequency on my writings, but publications of new posts will depend on the scope of my projects and the available spare time besides my work. As a result, I have decided to deactivate the comment section of the blog posts. But please feel free to contact me with any feedback (good or bad).
I hope you will enjoy the buhlian blog!
